Kano Spends N278 Million in Marrying Off 1, 111 Couples
Kano state government has expended N278, 270, 000 to facilitate the wedding of 1,111 couples under the fourth phase of its divorcees, widows and spinsters mass marriage programme.
The state governor, Rabi'u Kwankwaso stated this today (Monday) during a civic reception for the couples, graduation of the first phase of 4,400 women trained on different skills and family orientation under a programme tagged “Kwanwasiyya Women Empowerment scheme” and graduation of 220 women who were trained in TV production and Media practices.
He explained that the money was used to procure furniture, textile materials, foodstuff, capital grants to facilitate petty trading for the brides and other essential items.
Describing the event as unprecedented in the history of the West African sub-region, the governor said the marriage programme was initiated to help people strengthen the family institution and to halt social crimes in the society, most of which are as a result of erosion of family values.
Governor Kwankwaso maintained that his administration also initiated a special family orientation programme aimed at preventing and minimizing the rising cases of divorce in the state in addition to evolving capacity building programmes especially for women to enable them support their families.
Also during the occasion, the governor signed into law the Street Begging Bill 2013, highlighting that it prohibits children and adults from begging on the streets and other public places. He added that violating of the law and other laws against human trafficking will attract stiff penalties.
He said in order to cushion the effect of the law, a special empowerment programme for the physically challenged will be introduced, explaining that under the programme, 2, 205 people with disabilities in the state have been selected for training that suits their individual capacities.
Meanwhile, Governor Kwankwaso also used the opportunity of the event to hand over 20 Cottage industries renovated by the government to women cooperative groups and distributed empowerment packages to the beneficiaries of its empowerment programmes.
In her speech, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Binta Tijjani Jibril, said the state governments' empowerment programmes for women have not only helped to promote stable family units, but also have multiplier effect on the gross domestic product of the state.
“Indeed, experts have already forecast that if these and similar efforts at capacity building and empowerment are sustained, the disposable income of Kano state will surely catch up with that of Lagos in a short time”, she added.
On his part, the Commander–General of Kano Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, who focused extensively on the mass wedding, explained that 60 Christian couples were included in the programme, adding that marriages were regularized following rigorous screening and medical tests.
The occasion was attended by eminent personalities from within and outside the country including the Emir of Ningi, Alhaji Haruna Muhammad Danyaya, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto, the representative of the Emir of Kano, Wamban Kano Alhaji Abbas Sunusi, Shaikh Dahiru Bauchi, Shaikh Yusuf Sambo Rigachikun, Sheikh Abubakar bin Salah Al-Makki of Jam'iyyatul Birr Foundation of Saudi Arabia and Madame Ben Wahab Aichatou from Tattalin Iyali Foundation of Niger republic
